Last Half of Darkness: Original Trilogy
I'll be baaaaaaaaack!
Last Half of Darkness is an obscure horror-themed adventure game series that's garnered something of a cult following. They have a rather hamfisted approach to horror, with all the requisite tropes you'd expect, like "spoooooky" vampires, skulls, ghosts... the whole nine yards. Despite their primitive nature and the distinct beating that time has given them, there's a definite charm here.
Gameplay is somewhat reminiscent of games like Shadowgate, Deja Vu and Uninvited. You use a number of verb options like "Go" and "Open" (which are thankfully selectable by clicking on them or using the function keys rather than typing) to get around the environment, pick up various objects, and very likely find your way to an untimely death. Save often! Don't feel too bad if you end up having to consult a walkthrough either...
Phantasmagoria or even Harvester these are not, but they are an interesting trek back to a simpler time.
The series continued on past these first three entries, with games 4-6 included as a bonus with Last Half of Darkness: Society of the Serpent Moon (the seventh game) on Steam, all for a whopping $5. Check it out if you enjoy these!
